1. Statement of the Problem: Coming to North America
A. Defination: The case is about an Indonesian internation student, Anandita Rantung, having many problem when she was studying in America.
B. Analysis: Anandita Rantung was an internation student from Indoesia. She came to study in America with scholarship. However, during her college study, she met many problems such as bland food in the college cafeteria, low grades and misunderstanding of assignment based on unpolished English, and no close friends. She tried several ways, like going to the advising center, but she didn’t get any help. In the end, although she would lose the her scholarship and her family and friends might consider her a failure for giving up the chance to get a degree, she still decided to come back, since she had tried her best.
2. Suggestion of Possible Solutions
A. Solution 1: Learning how to make food by herself.
B. Solution 2: Go professors’ offices to talk with them.
C. Solution 3: Find some friends who are also international students.
3. Evaluation of Possible Solutions
A. Solution 1
1. Advantages: She can make her own food which tastes right to her. By doing this, she can also save money and find something to do rather than sleep all the time and waste time on doing nothing.
2. Disadvantages: she might find it is hard or boring to make food by herself. Moreover, preparing material and cooking food is really time-consuming and effort-demanding.
B. Solution 2
1. Advantages: By doing this, Dita can solve her homework problem without misunderstanding. Otherwise, professors can also help Dita with her test by giving her advise and paper by reviewing it. Probably, she also can have a chance to practise her English. Professors are always willing to help her, experienced and patient.
2. Disadvantages: The topic Dita can talk with her professors are limited. And professor can give her advice but they can help them with action.
C. Solution 3
1. Advantages: Have chance to make friends, probably some close friends, by talking with international students. They share the same problem with her. If they have overcome the obstacles, she can ask for help. If they not, struggle with them together.
2. Disadvantages: The language can be a big obstacle with them. Also, cultures vary from county to country.
4. Selection of a Solution
A. Choise: Find some friends who are also international students.
B. Justification: Compared with other two solutions, Solution 3 can offer her the most thing Dita need. The most important reason which leads her to quit is loneliness. Solution 3 can help her solve with this major problem and also provides a resource.
